Made from a classic Rhône blend of 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, and 6% Terret Noir, this wine is designed to reflect the rich diversity of the terroirs of the Southern Côtes du Rhône. The grapes come from 156 separate parcels located in virtually every part of the region; hence, "100%." The estate's traditional winemaking style favors a soft diffusion of tannins as opposed to harsh extraction, which makes this wine highly approachable now. Fresh and elegant, with lovely purity of fruit, it offers notes of ripe plum, black raspberries and spice, with notes of Provençal herbs rising at the finish. Drink now and over the next seven to eight years.
Carlos’ Cheese Pairing: Idiazabal
A traditional, semi-hard farmhouse cheese from the Basque and Navarra regions of northern Spain. Made from the milk of Carranza sheep, their exceptionally rich, fatty milk gives it a buttery mouthfeel and an intriguing gamey character. Similar to Manchego, it is lightly pressed and gently smoked over 7-10 days.
Bouquet of cassis, blueberries, lavender, cured meats, and graphite. It's deep, rich, medium to full-bodied, and has a great finish. The Mourvèdre keeps this tight and fresh.
Vignon’s 2019 Cotes du Rhone 100% is named not for being mono-varietal—it’s anything but—but for including parcels from virtually all of the appellations in the Southern Rhône. A blend of 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and the rest several other varieties and a bit of reserve wine from previous vintages, it offers a bouquet that combines garrigue with blackberries and adds subtle hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Full-bodied, concentrated and supple, it should be enjoyed over the next several years.
