About Calvert Woodley Wines & Spirits

Calvert Woodley opened its doors in 1982 after the merger of two competitors, Calvert Liquors and Woodley Wine & Liquor, and is still owned and operated by the original owners and their families. We pride ourselves on personal, knowledgeable customer service, fantastic selection and hard to beat prices.

Dating back to 1949, Calvert Liquors was located on Wisconsin Avenue in the Glover Park neighborhood. Woodley Wine & Liquor, created in 1966, was in the Cleveland Park strip across from the Uptown Theater. When the opportunity arose for Aaron Bernstein of Calvert to join forces with Ed Sands of Woodley, the two jumped at the chance and moved to our current location in the Van Ness/UDC neighborhood at the corner of Connecticut Ave and Windom.

Each store brought its strengths to help Calvert Woodley thrive. From Calvert came, among other things, La Cheeserie & International Deli and from Woodley came the Direct Importing of Bordeaux that has helped make our wine department the power it is today. Woodley began selling Bordeaux Futures with the 1966 vintage!

To help serve you as best we can we have about 50 employees. In addition to the owners, we're proud of the fact that five original employees from the opening in 1982 are still with us at CW today, with another three people having 25+ years under their belt. Among them is Carlos Estrada, who runs our La Cheeserie and is surely one of the most outstanding cheese merchants in the United States, and Tom McKnew, our Wine Manager who started at Woodley Wine & Liquor in 1980! With 40 other hard working employees, including sons of owners David Bernstein and Michael Sands, Calvert Woodley is poised to excel for years to come.

Visit us and see why we're the Number One wine and spirit shop in DC and one of the best in the country!

Tom McKnew - Wine Buyer

Tom has been our wine manager for over 25 years and has 30+ years experience in the wine business! His knowledge of wine is second to none. He is a lover of all wines, especially Burgundy and Bordeaux.

Bill Hunter - Wine Sales

Bill joined us in September 2010 after many years in the restaurant business. He's managed a few local restaurants throughout the past 20 years and helped develop the wine list at each restaurant. He's a lover of wines from the Northern Rhone Valley and from Loire, as well as wines from Oregon's Willamette Valley.

Matt Roman - Wine Sales

Matt entered the wine business after many years serving Washingtonians in some of DC's finest restaurants. He enjoys working with customers to find the right wine to match a meal or as the perfect gift. Matt joined us in 2006.

Christina Caswell - Wine Sales

Christina started with us in July 2012. She is a native Austrian who loves introducing customers to wine from her homeland — from the more well-known Grüner Veltliner to Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. In addition, she especially enjoys Argentinian and Spanish wines. An avid food lover and cook, Christina spends many weekends at the DC farmers' markets.

Blair Caviness - Wine Sales

Blair came to Calvert Woodley in November 2013 after many years on the wholesale side of the wine business. He loves helping people find a great bottle of wine, and loves French wines most of all.
