The 746 is the new release for Jacquesson's 2023 'Programme,' as they call it. Jacquesson is one of the oldest Champagne houses in Dizy and, for what it's worth, received a gold medal from Napoleon Bonaparte for the quality of their cellar some 200+ years ago. The Jacquesson name experienced a slight decline after the death of Adolphe Jacquesson, and it was not until Jean Chiquet bought it in 1974 that the name began to come back to its former glory. The Chiquet family revitalized the House, utilizing more Grand Cru grapes, oak barrels for complexity, and overall more scrutiny over the quality of the Champagne produced. Jacquesson now makes a new Cuvee every year, which they label sequentially with a number, this year's being 746. The base vintage here is from 2018 and contains grapes sourced from Aÿ, Dizy, Hautvillers (68%), Avize, and Oiry (32%), along with a splash of one of the oldest reserve wine collections in Champagne that has been used for over 700 Cuvees.
The 746 is a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and chardonnay, finished with a very low dosage, at less than a gram per liter which lets the purity of the fruit shine through. Jacquesson stated that 2018 started rainily and lasted through spring but turned around in June, becoming fine and dry, resulting in a particularly early harvest that began on August 30th and finished on September 10th. Jacquesson noted that the vines were in perfect health, and the harvest was abundant with an excellent degree of ripeness and moderate acidity, with the resulting wines being particularly fine and elegant. This vintage has amazing potential, and if we have learned anything from Jacqwuesson over the years, it is that their numbered series has become incredibly consistent, and 746 is no exception. This has just been released, and we have a limited amount of the only bottles currently available in the USA.
Based on the 2018 vintage, which was an early solar ripe vintage, the NV Champagne Cuvée 746 sees two grams per liter of dosage and is about 50% Chardonnay, the rest Pinot Noir and Meunier, and approximately 25% reserve wine. It pours a highly reflective straw hue and is aromatically forward out of the gate, with savory appeal and notes of citrus oil as well as juicy ripe berries. The palate is juicy and inviting, with approachable silky fruit and a fine mousse. It has wonderful balance, with the warmth from the vintage, and immediacy as well as structure that should provide a good bit of longevity over the coming 10-15 years.
