If there's a commune of Barolo that's renowned for full-bodied, well-structured, and profoundly ageworthy Barolo, it is surely Serralunga. The 2017 Cantina del Nebbiolo Serralunga lives up to its reputation, yet at the same time it is surprisingly approachable, thanks to the fine quality of the 2017 vintage. It is made with a traditional long maceration on the skins, followed by extended aging in large wooden barrels, with additional aging in the bottle prior to release. The long maceration on the skins imbues the wine with velvety flavors and aromas of violets, dark fruit and truffles, with an inner perfume of minerals and violets. Enjoyable now, this classic Barolo Serralunga will age gracefully for a decade or more.
Carlos’ Cheese Pairing: Gorgonzola Dolce
A soft, buttery blue cheese made from pasteurized cow's milk from northwest Italy. The “dolce” denotes a milder, creamier texture than the more traditional, firmer gorgonzola. While milder, it still offers the sweet, fruity pungency of a blue with notes of sour cream and mushrooms.
Bright garnet red wine with an expansive nose of red fruit and floral and spicy overtones, and a powerful, rich palate.
The aromatics of the 2017 Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D'Alba are dark fruited and candied, with plum compote, tar, and licorice. Drying with bitter herbs, the palate is firmly structured, with cherry pit, and burnt orange peel. Hold 3-5 years and drink 2024-2034.
