Marine air, bosc pear, subtle spice—fresh, salty and tense—remarkably refined and resonant—long cellaring potential.
The 2021 Chardonnay Pearlstad Vineyard is a new wine from Martin Woods. Grapes come from vines planted in 2016 in marine sediment, and the wine was matured for 14 months sur lie—old Oregon oak barrels, built and air-dried for four to five years at the winery, accounted for about half of the maturation vessels. The Pearlstad is reminiscent of Chablis with its mineral character and vibrance, although it holds on to its sunny Oregon fruit. On occasion, Chardonnay can become too leesy, but this offers a softness and roundness without overt leesy character. It has generous aromas of ripe quince, honey, bread dough and almond with touches of chalk. The palate is tighter at this youthful stage, bright and focused with saline, chalky fruit, a satiny texture and lingering floral perfume on the finish. It deserves 3-5 years in the bottle to unwind.
A bright pale straw hue, the 2021 Chardonnay Perlstad is fresh with saline and citrus pith and is linear and focused. It has great energy though without any austerity to it and has good freshness and a mineral texture. Drink it over the next 10 years.
