Gamay Wine

The fun-loving, bistro grape, gamay has explosive grapy purple fruit with a flowery bouquet. Typically light and fresh, with low tannins, gamay is very quaffable. Found in French Beaujolais; California’s "gamay beaujolais" grape is now thought to be pinot noir; "Napa gamay" may be the real thing, but there's some doubt as well. Beaujolais Nouveau has become popular through the years but has left people with the incorrect impression that Beaujolais can't produce fine wines.

The third Thursday in November is almost here so that must mean "It's Beaujolais Nouveau time!"

According to French law, the current vintage of Beaujolais Nouveau is released to the world each year just after midnight on the third Thursday in November. This year that's November 21st. The release of the Nouveau is met with much fanfare and celebration at wine shops and bistros across the globe. Much of the fanfare surrounding "Beaujolais Nouveau Day" is owed to none other than Georges Duboeuf, the acknowledged "King of Beaujolais." He’s not only a master winemaker, but a master marketer and promoter of his beloved Beaujolais.

Beaujolais Nouveau is a fun, easy wine to enjoy. The flavors are bright, the tannins are low, and the acidity is refreshing. It’s not to be sniffed and swirled and overanalyzed, just enjoyed for what it is. So what, exactly, is Beaujolais Nouveau? For the uninitiated, Beaujolais Nouveau is wine made in the Beaujolais region in France (just south of Burgundy) from Gamay grapes that were picked off the vine just weeks before. It’s fermented, bottled, and released all in record time to showcase the fun-loving nature of Gamay. Unlike most red grape varieties, which seem to need long aging, Gamay has a genius for expressing its effusively fruity personality almost from the get-go. There are other types of "non-Nouveau" Beaujolais, such as the later-released Crus, which are excellent in their own right, but none are quite as adept as Nouveau at capturing the cheerful spirit of the famous Gamay. It’s even better when slightly chilled.

As an added bonus, Beaujolais Nouveau arrives just in time for Thanksgiving, where it pairs marvelously with almost everything on the dinner table at our traditional American feast.

2012 Laurent Martray - Brouilly Combiaty Vieilles Vignes (750ml)
Varietal: Gamay | Location: France - Beaujolais - Brouilly
Red Wine

Widely considered one of the standard-bearers of Cru Beaujolais (the top-tier of the official Beaujolais hierarchy), the silky, scented Laurent Martray Brouilly Vieilles Vignes serves as a vivid reminder that Beaujolais, despite its humble origins in the Mâcon, is actually a part of Burgundy -- this wine is exceedingly Pinot Noir-like, tasting a good deal like a Pinot Noir from the Côte de Beaune.  It is made from 100% Gamay grapes, hand-harvested from 40-year old vines in the best part of the Brouilly cru. Winemaker Laurent Martray works 5 hectares of estate vineyards in Brouilly, as well as an additional 5 hectares rented from the renowned Château de la Chaize, his next-door neighbor.  He handcrafts this wine using manual punchdowns during fermentation, as is done in the Côte de Beaune, followed by 8-10 months aging in large oak foudres. The wine is then bottled without filtration to preserve the natural fruit flavors. This exceptional Brouilly opens with vibrant aromas of strawberries and raspberries, displaying a Pinot Noir-like precision and silkiness of fruit on the palate, supported on the finish by smooth tannins.  Impressive refinement for the price.
