"This just has to go down as one of the great successes of the vintage. Just to check, I tasted it blind against the Second Growths and its superiority shone out; then against other Firsts, and its combination of lush concentration and an elegant 'lift' put it right there at the top. At a quite moderate 136 g/l of residual, and an alcohol and acidity that are almost identical to the '07, this is the kind of 'nervous' balance that many larger estates would maybe have preferred to achieve this year. In that, it is one of the few wines to resemble the '01, and is maybe even superior."

White Wine

"As always, this is dominated by a freshness of flavour, this time kiwi-like fruit as well as the traditional mandarin orange peel - Xavier Planty calls it ?rhubarb?. The 35% Sauvignon, still apart in several lots in the cellar, is mainly responsible for this, but the S?millons are very aromatic too. The base is however powerful, although, at 135 g/l residual, they resisted the temptation of going for broke on sweetness, no mean feat for such a large estate con-fronted by such a sudden onrush of botrytis. The overall effect is of evenness and of a reserved kind of tightness, surrounded by but not dominated by all that freshness of pure fruit."

White Wine

"Unlike many, the assemblage was made back in January, so the wine is maybe more relaxed at this stage than those samples made up from the different lots, still apart in the cellar. This is also the first year of the new estate manager Vincent Laberg?re, taking the place of Patrick Eymery who retires in June, and he seemed keen to make a statement with this his first vintage. Rayne Vigneau has tended towards a lighter style recently, and this 2009 is a resolute return to something richer, with a more concentrated mouth-feel and 160 g/l of residual. But it is also bursting with fresh fruit aromas, from the higher than usual proportion of Sauvignon (28%) and from the absolute purity of the early October botrytis. The result is a densely sweet but highly 'tensile? and absolutely pure Rayne Vigneau."

2009 Château Rieussec - Sauternes (375ml)
2009 Château Rieussec - Sauternes (375ml)
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Sauternes
White Wine

"Rieussec flourishes in highly concentrated vintages, and 2009 is no exception. With 150 pickers working two 8-hour shifts, they managed to keep up to date with the year's rapid botrytis, and so maintained a total purity, elegance and complexity of flavour, and at 4,0 g/l, a high tone of acidity. At the same time, at 160 g/l residual, the wine is as usual unashamedly rich. The result is that honeyed sort of purity in the concentration that we saw something of in the historic '89 and '01, possibly superior to the former and almost up to the latter. The balance seems so natural and gives the impression of being able to age for a century or more."

2009 Château Suduiraut - Sauternes (375ml)
2009 Château Suduiraut - Sauternes (375ml)
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Sauternes
White Wine

"Pierre Mont?gut has had some challenges since arriving at Suduiraut in 2002. But to have brought off a success like 2009, with the rapidity of the botrytis stretching this large estate‟s systems to the limit, is a real feat. His '09 continues the trend of more concentrated and sweeter wines since 1997 than previously, and, at 160 g/l, it is on a par with Rieussec. However, the resemblance ends there, and with slightly more alcohol and slightly less acidity, the structure of the Suduiraut seems softer and more frankly powerful. There is something of the 1990 in this. The usual minty and lively flavour character of Suduiraut is currently buried under all this power but you see it all there and it will be pushing progressively through during the coming months in barrel."

2009 Château Vray Croix de Gay - Pomerol (750)
2009 Château Vray Croix de Gay - Pomerol (750ml)
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - Pomerol
Red Wine

"This blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc displays loads of power, structure and impressive density. The color is a healthy dark ruby/purple, and the wine offers up notes of black fruits, charcoal and forest floor. It is full-bodied and moderately tannic, but the low acidity and alcohol levels give it a certain accessibility. This is a sleeper of the vintage in Pomerol and possibly the best wine I have tasted from this estate. Give it several years of bottle age and drink it over the following 12-15 years."
