From the stable of local importer (and CW stalwart) Fran Kysela, Maipe produces a bevy of well-made, full flavored red, white, and rosé wines. All offer terrific value, but the newly released Bonarda Old Vine Reserve, which received a bravura 91-point rating from wine critic Robert Parker, is special even by that standard. Bonarda, a traditional Italian grape variety, does exceptionally well in Argentina's warm, dry climate, where it offers aromas and flavors that are both riper and spicier than the better known Malbec. The Bonarda Reserve, made from 100% Bonarda grapes hand harvested from the estate's finest vineyards, is aged 12 months in French oak barrels before bottling.
"... Its saturated purple color is accompanied by an exceptional bouquet of mulberry jam, spring flowers and loads of berry fruit. Although it was aged 12 months in French oak, there is no hint of oak, only super fruit, medium to full body, and a terrific mouthfeel as well as aromatics. This crowd-pleaser should drink nicely for another 2-3 years."
