2009 Bordeaux Futures - Sleepers of the Vintage!

"I hope readers will take a serious look at many of the less prestigious appellations and wines from those areas as they will no doubt represent fabulous bargains in 2009. Given the overall style of the 2009s, which combine creamy, voluptuous textures and sensational fruit-driven opulence with remarkable finesse, precision, purity, and vibrancy, the best of the 'little' wines will be delicious young, as will many of the classified-growths. This is a magical vintage!"
-- Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate (April 2010)

With so much of the recent focus of the 2009 Bordeaux Futures campaign centered around the much ballyhooed big-name wines, we shouldn't lose focus on the great value wines that Bordeaux should be famous for!

After spending a week in Bordeaux a few months ago, tasting hundreds and hundreds of wines, we're excited about the large number of value wines we found from nearly every appellation. As the quote above shows, Robert Parker from The Wine Advocate is as enthusiastic about these wines as we are!

You may be familiar with Mr. Parker's "Sleeper of the Vintage" notation in The Wine Advocate, where he describes wines "where the correlation between high quality and reasonable pricing favors the consumers." Below we have a list of 20+ "Sleepers of the Vintage," as well as a few other wines that we feel offer excellent value for the money. With pre-arrival case prices starting at less than $9 per bottle, we're sure you'll agree!

2009 Château Clarke - Listrac (750ml)
We've been carrying Chateau Clarke for years now but it wasn't until a few weeks ago that we finally got to visit. Wow, what a beautiful property! This Listrac chateau makes their wine like the top classified growths of Bordeaux and their hard work has paid off. The oak is apparent but well-integrated into this dark-purple, powerful wine. It's a well-balanced wine with bright fruit, great concentration and structure.
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

"Sweet berry and plums aromas follow through to a medium body, with juicy fruit and a long finish. Balanced and very pretty."
90-93 points--Wine Spectator

2009 Château Dutruch Grand Poujeaux - Moulis-en-Médoc (750ml)
Another hidden gem, we started with this property about 5 years ago and look forward to receiving this graceful and elegant 2009. It's supple and round but with good structure. Sweet, soft blackberry fruit in the mouth leads to silky tannins on the finish. It will be an attractive drink within four to six years.

2009 Château L'Estang - Côtes de Castillon (750ml)
"Another sleeper of the vintage, the opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2009 l’Estang exhibits lots of sweet black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with a hint of vanillin. Medium to full-bodied, with surprisingly pure, concentrated, lengthy flavors, it should drink well for 5-6 years. (Tasted once.)"
87-89 points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Chewy and rich, with plum and prune character. Medium-bodied, with firm fruit. A little aggressive."
