 | With its striking orange label and elaborately embossed Rh'style bottle, Arnoux P?'s richly fruity Vacqueyras has become a perennial Calvert Woodley customer favorite. The reason, quite simply, is that it is a phenomenal value, offering a level of intensity and complexity far above what one would expect in this price category. In style, Vacqueyras bears a fair comparison to the Southern Rh'standard-bearer Ch?auneuf-du-Pape, and in fact is permitted to use the same 13 grapes. However, the more apt comparison is to its immediate neighbor Gigondas, which is also a Grenache-based wine, with lesser amounts of Syrah blended in (85%/15%). Grenache's fruit-forward, lush intensity is what energizes this wine, with a dense fruity core of blueberry, crushed currant, and Proven? herbs laced throughout. An intriguing note of plum/hoisin reduction, a characteristic of the great 2009 southern Rh?vintage, emerges on the softly tannic finish. |
