Apothic Red is bold and enchanting, as it captures the dark fruit characteristics of Syrah and Zinfandel. These jammy flavors blend well with the elegant blackberry and black cherry characteristics of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The wine is further enhanced by undertones of mocha and vanilla.

This is a Bordeaux-inspired blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon. It's frankly delicious, with tiers of blackberry and cherry pie, milk chocolate and sweet, buttery, toasted oak flavors. Doesn't have the structure for aging, so drink up with a great steak.

Dark red, almost garnet hue with bright red on the rim. Ripe cherry and cedar on the nose with hints of dried rose petal and sweet oak. Lovely entry that leads into a fat and savory mid palate. Ripe fig and black currant dominate the finish with a breadth of soft, well integrated tannins.

Why do we call our "port" Starboard? Because it is not port. Genuine port comes from a region in Portugal, the Douro River Valley. Starboard - the nautical term for right (as opposed to port - left) is unique to our place.
How is Starboard different? We use the same grape varieties and similar methods as in the Douro, but our climate is warmer and the soils different. Instead of 140 proof fortifying brandy, we use a neutral grape spirit, 190 proof, for fortifying. We use 60 gallon barrels instead of 140 gallon pipes used in Portugal. Starboard matures earlier and has a riper more voluptuous flavor.
Starboard Batch 88 - The grapes in Batch 88 are primarily Tinta Roriz from the Madera area. The vineyard is managed to give loose bunches and a small crop. The blend is smooth and soft with a chocolate raisin character. Several different vintages are used in the blend which has an average age of about 5 years. In the port business this type of blend is called "Vintage Character."

Although the fresh cedar and cassis notes of Cabernet Sauvignon dominate the nose, the interplay of flavors on the palate is like a "Where's Waldo" wine game, with one varietal flavor emerging at one instant, followed by another, and then another, all merging in a chorus of fruit flavors at the finish. Light to medium-bodied, and totally ready to drink now, this is a delightful wine with the distinctive and interesting flavor signature of its own — a fitting tribute to the field blends of old.

"The 2010 Lytton Springs (67% Zinfandel, 23% Petite Sirah, 7% Carignane and 3% Mataro) is fascinating because it seems to have handled the heat spikes far better than the Geyserville. This is first and foremost Lytton Springs, and a product of the 2010 vintage second. Firm tannins frame an expressive core of dark red cherries, flowers and sweet herbs. The inner perfume of Zinfandel resonates on the finish. The 2010 needs time to soften, but it is quite beautiful. Lytton Spring is a much larger site than Geyserville, the choices for lots are much greater, which affords the winemaking team a great deal of flexibility in crafting the final blends. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. 93+"

Discovered for us by veteran CW wine consultant Pepi Almodovar, the only problem we've ever had with S.P. Drummer's Rumpus Red over the years has been keeping it in stock. It seems as though everyone who buys one bottle comes back for a case, and everybody who buys a case comes back for two more. The reason? This innovative blend of Syrah (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%) is sheer, unadulterated fun and we don't mean that in the cheap & cheerful, cute critter on the label sense of the term "fun wine." Rather, this is a seriously sophisticated wine that just happens to be an absolute delight to drink. The exuberance comes from the direct to the palate, vivid expression of spicy Syrah fruit, which is lush, mouthfilling, and full-bodied, yet at the same time complex, well-defined and harmoniously well-structured. Winemaker and native-Virginian Scott Peterson, a disciple of the legendary Andr? Tchelistcheff, and later the successor to Paul Hobbs as consulting winemaker at Argentina's flagship producer Catena Zapata, is a totally hands-on winemaker. His philosophy is that only extreme attention to detail in the vineyard, coupled with timely, but minimal intervention in the cellar, can create wines that are truly special. Rumpus Red is very much Scott's personal project, produced from select Sonoma County vineyards of Scott's own choosing. As good as previous vintages have been, the 2009 is without doubt the finest and most delectable yet!

The 2009 Treana Red exhibits rich aromas of red currant, plum and strawberry, with notes of coffee and spice. Concentrated flavors of ripe red cherry and boysenberry mingle with hints of anise seed, cocoa, pepper and earthiness on the mid-palate. Silky tannins and a round, velvety mouthfeel lead to a well-balanced, structured wine with a long, smooth finish.
