2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Wine between $10 and $25

Cabernet Sauvignon is a thick-skinned, black grape producing the most classic, age worthy (and needing of aging) red wines. Typically has flavors of fresh herbs (often quite pronounced), cedar, cassis, mint, black currant, and violets. Usually full-bodied wines, cabernet is often astringent when young due to mouth puckering tannins (a product of the grape skins that helps wine age).

Cabernet Sauvignon is found in many locales, most notably in California and red Bordeaux -- particularly in the Medoc, including Pauillac, St. Julien and the famous classified growth Bordeaux -- and is labeled cabernet sauvignon in South America, Australia, Italy and Washington. It's also in Italy's "Super-Tuscan" wines but usually not labeled cabernet.

The soul of Cabernet Sauvignon, many believe, lies in Napa Valley. Wines from these grapes taste richer, fuller and have legendary regional characteristics such as cherry or dusty nuances. Is it the weather, the soil, the sun, we aren't sure.

2009 Chateau Ste. Michelle - Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

Red Wine
WS 89
WE 90

This is a splendid rendition of Chateau Ste. Michelle's mainstay Cabernet, rich and round, with a sophisticated mix of grapes, including Malbec, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Dark fruit flavors of black cherry and cassis create a lush center, and the wine is more evolved and smoother, with less obvious oak and barrel flavor, than the pricier Cabs from Ste. Michelle.

A real beauty with graphite, minerality and rich, clean, exciting berry fruit and controlled oak aromas. Very pure and stylish Cabernet Sauvignon with fat but balanced cassis and sweet berry flavors. Big tannins lend structure and framework; young like a baby now; will be better and more evolved come fall, winter and over the next few years.

2009 Kendall-Jackson - Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon California
2009 Kendall-Jackson - Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon California
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon | Location: United States - California
Red Wine
WA 90
The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Reserve explodes from the glass with black fruit, grilled herbs, licorice, smoke and tar. The Grand Reserve reveals tons of energy and exceptional overall balance. In 2009 the blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, all from the Alexander Mountain Estate Vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. I must say I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Kendall-Jackson. Qualitatively the wine are head and shoulders above the vast majority of what is available in the same price points, but what amazes me most is Kendall-Jackson's ability to achieve such a high average level of quality with production levels that are truly eye-popping. In 2010, which was not an abundant year, Kendall-Jackson produced nearly 2,000,000 cases of the flagship Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay. This is a brilliant showing from winemaker Randy Ullom and his team comprised of Matthew Smith (reds) and Mark Theis (whites). Tel. (800) 769-3649; www.kj.com

2009 Viña Montes - Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon Apalta Vineyard Colchagua Valley
2009 Viña Montes - Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon Apalta Vineyard Colchagua Valley
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon | Location: Chile - Central Valley - Colchagua Valley
Red Wine
WA 89
The 2009 Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon contains 10% Merlot and was sourced entirely from the estate's Apalta vineyards. It was aged for 12 months in French oak. It reveals a reticent nose which with coaxing displays notions of toast, spice box, violets, black currant, and blackberry. In the glass it has ample fruit, tasty flavors, and decent balance but lacks the breadth and volume for an outstanding rate. Even so, there is much to like in this wine which should be consumed over the next 4-5 years. Aurelio Montes has a well-earned reputation as one of Chile's foremost vignerons. The Montes wines offer great value at the lower end of the spectrum and set the bar for what can be achieved in Chile at the higher end.
