A bruising, black/purple-hued, full-bodied wine, the 2009 Certan de May displays notes of charcuterie, smoked game, herbs, black truffles, roasted meats, cassis and black cherries. This backward, robustly-styled Pomerol is loaded with tannin as well as extract. Give this full, powerful 2009 a decade of cellaring and drink it over the following 30+ years. I?m sure it is not better than the immortal 1982 Certan de May.

This estate, which enjoys a fabulous location on the high plateau of Pomerol with neighbors such as Lafleur, Vieux-Chateau-Certan, Petrus and La Fleur Petrus, should produce even greater wines. While I long for a return to the fabulous Certan de Mays of the early and mid-eighties, the 2010 is an impressive effort. Aromas of black fruits intermixed with an iron-like character, soil, oak and earth undertones emerge from this full-bodied, masculine, borderline rustic wine. With abundant concentration as well as elevated tannins, this Pomerol will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030+. There are approximately 1,500 cases of this 80% Merlot/20% Cabernet Franc blend. Owned by Christian Moueix, Hosanna was carved out of the old estate of Certan Giraud with the finest parcels going in to Hosanna. The dense purple-hued 2010 exhibits a sweet bouquet of melted chocolate, black raspberries, black currants, coffee and Asian plum sauce. Full-bodied and rich with serious tannin, good acidity and alcohol that must be pushing toward 14.5%, it will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring and should last for 20-25 years.
