The 2009 is possibly the best Cap de Faugeres yet made, a sleeper of the vintage, and a realistically priced one at that. A blend of 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that hit 14% natural alcohol, the wine displays loads of charcoal, blackberry, espresso roast and white chocolate. It is full-bodied, unctuously textured, with very sweet tannin and stunning purity, texture and length. This is a super-duper wine, bottled unfined and unfiltered under the guidance of the consultant Michel Rolland. Drink it over the next 10+ years. Under new proprietor Silvio Denz, the wines from this property, as well as his Chateau Faugeres in St.-Emilion, have gotten better, even by the high standards maintained by the previous proprietor.

This was one of our favorite petit chateaux in 2005, and the 2009 lives up to lofty expectations. It is incredibly dark in color, with dark fruit and new oak prominent on the nose. On the palate, rich, ripe fruit is balanced with hints of vanilla and a light touch of cedar. The finish is long, with soft, finely-grained tannins. If you are looking for modern-style Bordeaux, this is the ticket! Tasted multiple times during our trip.

This is a gorgeous effort, made from a blend of 80% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Cropped at 22 hectoliters per hectare from their clay over limestone soils, the wine displays oodles of new oak, crushed chalk, and blueberry and blackberry fruit with hints of raspberries and pen ink. It is full-bodied and layered, with a fleshy, even succulent mid-palate and a long, long finish. This is terrific Castillon to drink over the next 10-15+ years. Note the name change with the dropping of the ?Les? in between ?Clos? and ?Lunelles.? This property was acquired by Gerard and Chantal Perse in 2001, and has been the reference point for how terrific Cotes de Castillon wines can be, although in 2009 it has to take a backseat to Silvio Denz's Cap de Faugeres remarkable Mouleyre.
