 | | South Africa's singular contribution to the world of wine, Pinotage sprang into existence in 1925 when a professor at Stellenbosch University made an experimental hybrid cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, then commonly (and incorrectly) called Hermitage in South Africa. That explains Pinotage's contracted name, but not its walk on the wild side flavor profile, which is uniquely its own. Ken Forrester's whimsically titled Petit Pinotage is a real beauty, a lush, fruit forward take on the delectably chunky Pinotage. Leaning decidedly towards the Pinot Noir side of the family tree, it offers a silky m?lange of ripe plum, cherry, and mulberry fruit, with a gentle note of scorched earth toward the finish. |
