Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc | Location: France - Loire Valley - Menetou-Salon
Although there are subtle differences between the terroir of Menetou-Salon, an up-and-coming region in central Loire, and that of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé to its east, all three regions offer a unique and distinctive take on the expressive Sauvignon Blanc grape variety. In this classic, cool season Loire year, this well-made Assadet Menetou-Salon rings with the freshness and vibrant acidity of the vintage.

""Rounded and inviting, with hints of pear and apple giving way to more citrus, floral and straw notes. This has good range, with a brisk edge waiting in the wings on the finish."

We really enjoyed this wine during our group tasting with Bill Blatch, even before he took us to Chateau Coutet later that day! Our meeting with Aline Baly, niece of owner Philippe Baly, only reconfirmed our wonderful feelings for this wine. Rich and lush with tropical fruit flavors galore, this is fantastic stuff!

Denis Dubourdieu's Barsac cru has an attractive bouquet with subtle notes of cooking apple, pear and lime-flower, all with very fine delineation. The palate displays good weight and a fine thread of acidity, lending tension and poise that leads to a taut finish, showing good botrytis levels for the vintage. With its trademark minerality in place, this Doisy-Daene comes highly recommended.Denis Dubourdieu's Barsac cru has an attractive bouquet with subtle notes of cooking apple, pear and lime-flower, all with very fine delineation. The Doisy-Vedrines has a refined bouquet of lemon curd, dried honey and just a touch of quince, perhaps not quite as rich as recent vintages, but very well-defined. The palate is well-balanced, with a touch of lime cordial and passion fruit on the entry, and zesty acidity and impressive precision towards the taut, slightly spicy rich finish. Returning after an hour, this sample has enhanced clarity and volume, and subsequent encounters confirm a very promising Doisy-Vedrines.The Doisy-Vedrines has a refined bouquet of lemon curd, dried honey and just a touch of quince, perhaps not quite as rich as recent vintages, but very well-defined. This "First Growth" Sauternes is owned by our friend Xavier Planty who has been at Guiraud nearly 30 years and just recently became owner after being winemaker and Director. This 2010 is another great Guiraud, fat and rich and quite sweet. Has the classic spiciness of Guiraud. Despite the high level of sweetness, it's fairly light on its feet.

Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - Entre-Deux-Mers
Produced in Entre-Deux-Mers ("between two seas"), a picturesque region of Bordeaux sandwiched between the Garonne and the Dordogne rivers, this zesty Bordeaux blanc from the highly regarded 2010 vintage is a perfect all around summer white. Although most Entre-Deux-Mers is dominated by the assertive Sauvignon Blanc grape variety, Château Martinon's conscientious owner, Jerome Trolliet, favors Sémillon, using it for more than 60% of the blend, with Sauvignon Blanc (30%) and Muscadelle (10%) making up the rest. The emphasis on Sémillon yields a wine that is considerably more rich and savory than most Bordeaux Blanc. The floral and mineral scented 2010 Château Martinon offers juicy lemon, citrus, and marmalade fruit, which makes it an ideal accompaniment to oysters (the classic match), fish, grilled poultry, and light meats. It is also a great choice to sip all by itself, with the sea breezes blowing.

Suduiraut has been on a major roll as of late and this is another fantastic effort. Very rich and sweet, but extremely elegant and fresh. Notes of candied passion fruit flow through to a super long finish.

This delicious white, from white wine master and enology professor Denis Dubourdieu, has bright and tangy flavors of lemon-zest and grapefruit, with a very long and focused finish that ends with a nice bit of minerality. It should age nicely, if you can wait! (tasted three times including once with Denis Dubourdieu himself) -- CW Wine Staff (April 2011)

This white was a new discovery for us from one of Bordeaux's rebels, Jonathan Maltus. A classic blend of 40% Semillon, 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Muscadelle, it has incredibly concentrated, fresh flavors of white peach and honeysuckle with a touch of beeswax. Though the wine is made in 50% new and 50% one year old barrels, the oak is well-integrated and impeccably balanced. -- CW Wine Staff (April 2011)

Bill Blatch introduced us to this property last year and it was one of our most popular 2009 Sauternes. The 2010 is a worthy successor. There's a good amount of sweetness but it's not at all heavy. Very fresh, very well-balanced, very nice!
