Deep purple in color with a ruby red hue, this exceptionally well-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits ripe blackberry, cassis and plum fl avors, colored with a touch of mocha and coffee. The sweet, fruity entry is enhanced with a juicy mouthfeel, notes of savory herbs and velvety tannins, followed by a long, smooth finish.

Delicate pear and floral notes backed by toasty almond. On the palate, one finds lively citrus, toast and apple flavors overlaid with persistent effervescence, a creamy mid-palate and toasty finish.

The 2010 Chardonnay Sonoma County is a deep, expressive wine laced with apricot, pears, flowers and spices. The Chardonnay is fermented in barrels (36% new), yet the wine shows considerable freshness, vivacity and energy. Clean, saline notes round out the mineral-drenched finish. This is a fabulous effort for a wine with a production of 5,400 cases. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. I was very impressed with the wines I tasted from Matanzas Creek and winemaker Marcia Monahan. This is a particularly mature nonvintage, with toast and secondary flavors of almonds and yeast. The acidity is there, but it is mature and ripe, leaving a wine that lingers softly, beautifully integrated. —Roger Voss,
