2009 Château Doisy-Védrines - Barsac
2009 Château Doisy-Védrines - Barsac
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Sauternes - Barsac
White Wine
WA 94

"The feature of this wine is clearly its menthol-fresh brightness and spring flowers aromas. Probably all this comes, rather like at La Tour Blanche, partly from the particularly fresh nature of the 15% Sauvignon, partly from the soil structure.

At 140 g/l, the wine is certainly very rich and this sweetness almost - but doesn't quite - smother these fine aromas. So the wine is a combination of extreme fragrance with quite extreme concentration: rich yet fresh, strong yet gentle."

JADE JAGGER DESIGNS CROIX DE BEAUCAILLOU LABEL!

Calvert Woodley is proud to be one of a handful of retailers in the US selected by Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou to offer the newest brainchild of its innovative, art-loving owner, Bruno Borie.

Bruno commissioned noted designer Jade Jagger, daughter of Mick and Bianca, to create an elegant label for Croix de Beaucaillou, his superb "second wine." Bruno told Decanter magazine, "I really admired the work that Jade Jagger did … and we liked the idea of the daughter of a Rolling Stone working on Beaucaillou." Apropos when you realize that Beaucaillou means 'beautiful stones' in French.

The re-design of the Croix de Beaucaillou label will commence with the 2010 vintage but as a pre-cursor, Bruno and Jade have made available extremely limited supplies, in large format bottles, of the sensational 2009 vintage with the new label.

Quantities are limited!

Bruno has made it a personal project to raise the level of quality of Croix de Beaucaillou and he wanted to re-design the label to showcase the uniqueness of the wine. Not your typical "second wine," Croix de Beaucaillou is sourced from its own dedicated vineyards to give it a more consistent quality. It undergoes the same rigorous selection as the grand vin but comes from younger vines than Ducru which makes it more approachable at a younger age. Having now tasted the wine at the chateau two years in a row we can say without hesitation, "Mission accomplished!"

2009 Château Duhart-Milon - Pauillac
2009 Château Duhart-Milon - Pauillac
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - Pauillac
Red Wine
WA 97
A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Merlot, it displays an inky/blue/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice, lead pencil, cedar and subtle barrique smells. Viscous and full-bodied, it is the most concentrated and broadest example of this cuvee I have tasted in over three decades. It will be ready to drink in 5-7 years and should last for three decades or more. Consumers looking to maximize value should be checking out Duhart Milon, as this may be the single smartest purchase in this great and historic vintage! Since few consumers other than Chinese billionaires can afford wines such as Lafite Rothschild, perhaps it is time for readers to take a look at Duhart Milon, which sells for less than Lafite's second wine. The Rothschilds have invested heavily in resurrecting this property to near super-star status, and the 2009 appears to be the finest Duhart I have ever tasted.

2009 Château Dutruch Grand Poujeaux - Moulis-en-Médoc
2009 Château Dutruch Grand Poujeaux - Moulis-en-Médoc
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - Moulis-en-Médoc
Red Wine

The home of Château Chasse Spleen and numerous other excellent Châteaux sharing the name "Poujeaux," the commune of Moulis has some of the finest, deep gravel ridges in Bordeaux, outside of the famed Margaux commune. In contrast to its very supple 2008, Dutruch Grand Poujeaux has produced a startlingly powerful 2009, with deep, smoky flavors of baked cherry confit, cassis, Provençal herbs. A concentrated, impressive wine that will clearly reward 5 to 7 years of cellaring.

"Gabriel de Vaucelles claims to have produced a very similar wine to his famed '90. Certainly the analysis is the same: (13?8 alcohol, 140 g/l residual and 4.0 g/l total acidity). However, whereas the '90 had a certain roasted quality to the fruit, the '09 is fresher, and has a very pronounced mineral flavour that keeps it tighter amidst all the very strong concentration."

2009 Château Fontenil - Fronsac
2009 Château Fontenil - Fronsac
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - Fronsac
Red Wine
WS 91
WA 91
The basic Fontenil (95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) has a deep bluish purple color and relatively hefty alcohol at 14.5%, but it is not noticeable in this full-bodied, layered, opulent wine, with lots of black raspberry fruit intermixed with some blueberries and crushed rock. Both of these wines have a good 10-15 years of potential in a fine cellar. Two of the best wines from Dany and Michel Rolland are these vintages of Fontenil in Fronsac.

"As always, this is dominated by a freshness of flavour, this time kiwi-like fruit as well as the traditional mandarin orange peel - Xavier Planty calls it ?rhubarb?. The 35% Sauvignon, still apart in several lots in the cellar, is mainly responsible for this, but the S?millons are very aromatic too. The base is however powerful, although, at 135 g/l residual, they resisted the temptation of going for broke on sweetness, no mean feat for such a large estate con-fronted by such a sudden onrush of botrytis. The overall effect is of evenness and of a reserved kind of tightness, surrounded by but not dominated by all that freshness of pure fruit."

2009 Château Haut Mayne - Cuvée Mayne du Cros Graves
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - Graves
Red Wine

Supple and smooth, this is a distinctly pretty Graves rouge, with ripe Cabernet and Merlot fruit gracefully layered over soft tannins. The voluptuous style of the 2009 vintage really plays to its strengths, and combines nicely with the château's excellent Graves terroir. The owner is Michel Boyer, whose daughter Catherine d'Halluin also makes outstanding wine at Château Clos Bourbon in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux.

Owner Eric Perrin, of Château Carbonnieux, working with star consultant Denis Dubourdieu of the University of Bordeaux, has produced an unusually ripe and powerful red Graves in 2009, with excellent structure. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot and the wine displays pleasing aromas of super-ripe black fruit and blackcurrant flavor, nicely set off by subtle roasted notes of new oak.

A major sleeper of the vintage, this outstanding wine from the Aubert family in St.-Emilion has terrific plum, black cherry and cassis fruit as well as hints of earth and flowers. Supple-textured, opulent and savory, it is a heady, fleshy wine to drink over the next 3-5 years.

WA 97
Even with considerable youthful characteristics, this stunning, open-knit 2009 is quite approachable. This fabled terroir sandwiched between Petrus and Lafleur (hence the name) generally produces one of the more elegantly-styled Pomerols, but in 2009 it offers an extra dimension of flavor intensity as well as more texture and concentration. It reveals a super-seductive perfume of mocha, loamy soil, herbs, black cherries and black currants, truffles and licorice, full body and velvety tannins. The overall impression is one of intensity, power, glycerin and richness as well as undeniable elegance and laser-like focus. This 2009 can be drunk now or cellared for another 25-30+ years.

Red Wine

With vineyards located amidst the finest parcels of Chateau Margaux, cru bourgeois La Gurgue offers one of the purest expressions of Margaux terroir in the entire commune. Tasting the 2009 with its dynamic owner Claire Villars was one of the highlights of my recent visit to Bordeaux. The 2009 opens with a pure Margaux bouquet of violets, spring flowers and a hint of vanilla. It rolls over the palate with lush notes of fresh berries, cherries, and spice, and finishes with smooth, fine grained tannins. Quite expressive and utterly graceful.

It is not unusual that the 2009 La Lagune is a spectacular effort given the fact that this estate has been making terrific wines over the last decade or more. It boasts a dense purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of blueberries, mulberries, cassis, white chocolate and subtle toasty oak. Notes of Chinese black tea, cedarwood and forest floor also make an appearance in the singular aromatic and flavor profiles. This sumptuous, full-bodied La Lagune possesses low acidity, abundant but ripe, sweet tannin and a long, 45-second finish. Give this beauty 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades. Read More

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape is performing even better from bottle than it did last year. Composed of 47% Grenache, 38% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre, it is surprisingly soft and evolved for La Nerthe, but that actually gives the wine additional appeal. Its dense ruby/purple hue is followed by aromas of blue and black fruits, lavender, licorice, truffles and garrigue. Full-bodied, supple textured, fleshy and succulent, it will provide enjoyment over the next 10-15 years.
