2009 Antinori - Tignanello Toscana
2009 Antinori - Tignanello Toscana
Varietal: Red Blend | Location: Italy - Tuscany
Red Wine
WS 92
WA 94

The 2009 Tignanello is quite beautiful. Cedar, graphite, sweet herbs, licorice and leather add complexity to a core of highly expressive red fruits. The 2009 impresses for its energy, drive and focus. Today, the 2009 comes across as slightly understated relative to many recent vintages, especially 2007 and 2008. There is a silkiness and polish that is reminiscent of the 2004. Tignanello is 75% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc from vineyards in San Casciano Val di Pesa, one of the most evocative hillsides in all of Italy. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

Red Wine

2009 Jensen possesses a deep, rich garnet hue. Luscious aromas of cranberry, violets, granite, turmeric and raspberry torte mix with an alluring bouquet of peppery nutmeg and black cherry. This fascinating wine offers flavors of baking spice, ripe strawberries, rhubarb pie, chalky minerality and sweet berry wrapped around a juicy, elegant core of fine grained tannins, then trails off to a long, pleasurable finish.

2009 Calera - Pinot Noir Selleck Vineyard Mount Harlan
Varietal: Pinot Noir | Location: United States - California - Mount Harlan
Red Wine

This 2009 Selleck Vineyard Pinot Noir is fascinating and simply stunning. It begins with evocative flowing aromas of gardenia, red currant, cranberry, flinty minerality, pine and faint black licorice. Flavors are concentrated, intense and velvety; lingonberry, dark cherry, a whisper of cinnamon and citrus rind, and seamlessly encompass the palate with a texture that is graceful, broad and beautifully balanced, then lingers slowly on into a juicy, almost ethereal, mouthwatering finish.

2009 Château Croix de Labrie - St.-Emilion
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - St.-Emilion
Red Wine
WA 95
Always one of Bordeaux's most endearing and charming wines, Croix de Labrie's wines generally offer an unctuous texture as well as enormous quantities of fruit. Made from 100% Merlot, the 2009 (about 300 cases produced) exhibits smoky black currant and raspberry liqueur notes intermixed with notions of licorice, graphite and wood smoke. Intense and unctuously textured with low acidity as well as sweet tannin, it is a hedonistic St.-Emilion fruit bomb to enjoy in its first 12-15 years of life. Sadly, it is virtually impossible to find this head-turning claret.

2009 Château de Fargues - Sauternes (375ml)
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Sauternes
White Wine
WA 97

"How absolutely refreshing the more acid nature of Fargues is in a vintage of such richness! It acts as a veritable flavour enhancer, bringing out the strongly mineral character of the terroir and the forceful tea and cinnamon flavours of the botrytis, still noticeable even after 6 months of ?levage. This is a broadly constituted, strong flavoured, quite forceful Sauternes (Maybe it wasn't by chance that Comte Alexandre served the almost equally strong ?83 for lunch after our last tasting). It has clearly been built for the long haul, not only for the extra year of ?levage in barrel that they do here, but also for really long-term cellaring in bottle."

2009 Château La Lagune - Haut-Médoc
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - Haut-Médoc
Red Wine
WS 96
WA 95
It is not unusual that the 2009 La Lagune is a spectacular effort given the fact that this estate has been making terrific wines over the last decade or more. It boasts a dense purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of blueberries, mulberries, cassis, white chocolate and subtle toasty oak. Notes of Chinese black tea, cedarwood and forest floor also make an appearance in the singular aromatic and flavor profiles. This sumptuous, full-bodied La Lagune possesses low acidity, abundant but ripe, sweet tannin and a long, 45-second finish. Give this beauty 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades. Read More

2009 Château Langoa Barton - St.-Julien
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - St.-Julien
Red Wine
WA 90

When we tasted the 2009 Langoa Barton with Lilian Barton at her office in St. Julien, we were expecting a well-made, delicious wine, but we couldn't have been more impressed! A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, it was deep purple in the glass with aromas of blueberries, blackberries and a hint of vanilla and pepper. Although it had one of the highest tannin levels in the history of the estate, they were smooth and well-integrated already. It is one of the best Langoa's we've ever tasted from barrel.

2009 Château Rieussec - Sauternes
2009 Château Rieussec - Sauternes
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Sauternes
White Wine
WS 92
WE 96
WA 95

"Rieussec flourishes in highly concentrated vintages, and 2009 is no exception. With 150 pickers working two 8-hour shifts, they managed to keep up to date with the year's rapid botrytis, and so maintained a total purity, elegance and complexity of flavour, and at 4,0 g/l, a high tone of acidity. At the same time, at 160 g/l residual, the wine is as usual unashamedly rich. The result is that honeyed sort of purity in the concentration that we saw something of in the historic '89 and '01, possibly superior to the former and almost up to the latter. The balance seems so natural and gives the impression of being able to age for a century or more."

Redolent of blackberry and dark fruits, this also features a fascinating mix of mocha, graphite and tobacco flavors. Very juicy as well, which figures into the finish of fine-grained tannins and spice. An exuberant and refined Vintage Port. Best from 2020 through 2050. 5,000 cases made. ?KM

2009 Joseph Drouhin - Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches
2009 Joseph Drouhin - Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches
Varietal: Pinot Noir | Location: France - Burgundy - Beaune
Red Wine
WA 93
The 2009 Beaune Clos des Mouches is totally beautiful. It shows gorgeous inner perfume and a weightless, gracious personality. The inner sweetness of the fruit flows nicely to the sensual, radiant fruit. A lovely vein of minerality underpins the subtle finish. Drouhin has a total of 7 hectares planted with Pinot Noir in the Clos des Mouches. The house's harvest starts and ends here. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2039.

Drouhin farms 75 hectares of vineyards according to biodynamic principles. Maceration and fermentation lasts about three weeks. The wines are then racked into oak in a cold part of the cellar to slow down the malos, although in 2009 they were entirely done by December. The estate leaves the wines on their lees for several months with one racking, or two if needed, prior to being assembled for bottling. New oak ranges from 25% for the entry-level wines to 50-65% for the grand crus. Veronique Drouhin thinks the 2009s will stay open throughout their lives, much as the 1985s have. All of these 2009s were bottled between early December, 2010 and January, 2011.

2009 Louis Jadot - Beaune 1er Cru 150th Anniversary Cuvée
2009 Louis Jadot - Beaune 1er Cru 150th Anniversary Cuvée (1.5L)
Varietal: Pinot Noir | Location: France - Burgundy - Beaune
Red Wine
WA 92-95

First, this is not the same as the regular (and very pleasant) Beaune Premier Cru that Louis Jadot offers in many vintages. It is a unique selection of Jadot's best Beaune climats, vinified to Grand Cru standards, including an extra 6 months of aging in mostly new oak. (Note the names of all the vineyards amidst Bacchus's curly locks.) The wine clearly shows the greatness not only of Jadot's winemaking, but of the 2009 vintage, which has an uncanny combination of delectably forward, seamless Pinot Noir fruit allied to a formidable structure for long aging. The wine opens with a stunning bouquet of fresh bing cherries, suffused with gentle notes of vanilla from aging in new oak barrels. On the palate, the bold, pure, indelibly seamless Pinot Noir fruit is framed by a wonderful backbone of abundant, silky tannins. Crisp acidity keeps the finish reassuringly dry, with just the right amount of tautness over the deep red fruit to make you desperate for the next sip. They say this wine can last 30 years and I don't doubt it, but I'm going to have a hard time keeping my hands off it from the day it arrives.

2009 Louis Jadot - Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St.-Jacques
2009 Louis Jadot - Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St.-Jacques
Varietal: Pinot Noir | Location: France - Burgundy - Gevrey-Chambertin
Red Wine
WA 93
The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles St. Jacques emerges from the glass with explosive dark fruit. This is an especially large scaled, big style of Gevrey, but all of the elements come together nicely in the glass. The tannins turn incisive on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

I tasted an impressive range of wines with Jacques Lardiere and his successor Frederic Barnier, who is slated to take over when Lardiere retires at the end of 2012. Jadot makes a mind-bending number of wines, but I limited myself to the best 35 or so examples. In 2009 Jadot began harvesting on September 6. All of the reds were made from 100% destemmed fruit. Maceration times varied from wine to wine, but according to Lardiere all of the wines were made with essentially the same approach. Lardiere is another of the producers who compares 2009 to 1959, and believes the wines will age well because of their density of fruit and minerality. Many of the estate's own vineyards are farmed biodynamically, but of course Jadot also sources a significant amount of wine from other growers that is not necessarily from biodynamically farmed vineyards.
