 | | For those who seek hand-crafted, highly individual wines that express the place where they are made and are affordably priced as well, Saint-Chinian, in Languedoc-Roussillon is a veritable playground. A delightfully broad range of grape varieties thrives here, including Syrah (70%), Grenache (20%; 30 year old vines) and knobby ancient vine Carignan (10%; 80 year old), which make up the blend of the brilliant 2009 Domaine Sorteilho. Saint-Chinian, which was granted AOC status in 1982, is located between the Faug?rois to the east and the better-known Minervois to the west. Experts consider it among the finest vineyards of the entire Languedoc-Roussillon. Grown on schist terrain in the prized northern part of the appellation, the grapes for Domaine Sorteilho, which are hand-picked, receive a long, traditional maceration of up to 20 days to extract maximum color and flavors; a small portion goes through carbonic maceration to bring out primary grape aromas. Deep red-purple in color, this wine sports fresh, cheerful flavors and aromas marked by nuances of red berries mixed with garrigue. Its spiciness is enriched by a distinctive whiff of scorched wood and licorice, very typical of the region's schist terrain. Full-bodied, with a fine texture from high quality tannins, Domaine Sorteilho is ready to drink now, but also has the structure to lay down for an additional 2-3 years, if not longer. |
