The 2009 Antiguas Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon is a perennial Best Buy in these pages. Sourced from vineyards planted in 1932, it was aged in 1- to 4-year-old barriques for 14 months. Spicy red fruits, cedar, tobacco, and violets compose the bouquet of this surprisingly elegant offering. The 2009 vintage was wet and the wine lacks the concentration and structure of the better years but is still a solid wine as well as an excellent value. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. We were fortunate to secure a small quantity of the newly renamed, limited production "Grande Reserve," a premium level Cabernet produced at Château Lafite-Rothschild's very interesting Los Vascos property in Chile. Lafite's holdings are in a prized area of the Maipo Valley called Colchagua, considered the "Médoc" of Chile due to the very Bordeaux-like structure of its tannins. The 2009 "Grande Reserve" most definitely displays a Lafite-like personality of elegance and charm. A year of aging in new French oak provides an added dash of refinement.

The 2009 Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon contains 10% Merlot and was sourced entirely from the estate's Apalta vineyards. It was aged for 12 months in French oak. It reveals a reticent nose which with coaxing displays notions of toast, spice box, violets, black currant, and blackberry. In the glass it has ample fruit, tasty flavors, and decent balance but lacks the breadth and volume for an outstanding rate. Even so, there is much to like in this wine which should be consumed over the next 4-5 years. Aurelio Montes has a well-earned reputation as one of Chile's foremost vignerons. The Montes wines offer great value at the lower end of the spectrum and set the bar for what can be achieved in Chile at the higher end. Importer: TGIC Imports, Woodland Hills, CA; www.tgicimports.com
