2005 Château Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarosse - St.-Emilion
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend | Location: France - Bordeaux - St.-Emilion

WA 91
While no one will confuse the 2005 with this estate's prodigious 1990, it is an outstanding effort from one of St.-Emilion's finest terroirs. In terms of potential, the vineyard is exceeded only by Ausone, Pavie and Belair for micro-climate and exposition. A beautiful dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by an ethereal nose of blueberry liqueur, spring flowers, melted licorice, raspberries, and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied with good acidity, sweet but high tannin, a broad mouthfeel, and admirable elegance as well as freshness, this beauty should age easily for 25+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.While no one will confuse the 2005 with this estate's prodigious 1990, it is an outstanding effort from one of St.-Emilion's finest terroirs. Not surprisingly, the 2005 Cuvee Speciale Peby, which was inaugurated in 1998, is a blockbuster. Yields were low (25 hectoliters per hectare) for this sensational 100% Merlot from 45-year old vines. The inky/black/purple color is followed by a super-rich wine boasting plenty of graphite, pain grille, melted chocolate, black currant, blackberry, smoke, and truffle characteristics. It is extremely powerful, concentrated, and extracted. Give it a decade of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades. If there is one reservation to heed, it is the very high level of tannins. Not surprisingly, the 2005 Cuvee Speciale Peby, which was inaugurated in 1998, is a blockbuster. Thank goodness this estate's new consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt, has toned down what was often too much new oak. He also appears to have built in more density. The 2005 is a beautifully exuberant, sexy wine displaying copious black cherry, toasty oak, raspberry, and vanillin notes. Pure, rich, medium to full-bodied, and luscious, patience will not be required for this beauty as it can be consumed now and over the next 12-15 years.Thank goodness this estate's new consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt, has toned down what was often too much new oak.
