Portugal's Douro Valley ranks with the greatest terroirs in the world, but until recently, wine production was limited largely to sweet wines, such as vintage Port. Lately, however, the traditional Port houses have begun to explore the area's untapped potential for producing dry red table wines. Vale do Bomfim, from the prestigious house of Dow's Port, has been a shining success. A blend of traditional Port grapes (primarily Tinta Barroca and Touriga Nacional), Vale do Bomfim delivers bright, pure, black and red fruit, deftly layered over crisp, Bordeaux-like tannins. A light sheen of new oak adds a finishing polish. |
