Deep purple in color with a ruby red hue, this exceptionally well-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits ripe blackberry, cassis and plum fl avors, colored with a touch of mocha and coffee. The sweet, fruity entry is enhanced with a juicy mouthfeel, notes of savory herbs and velvety tannins, followed by a long, smooth finish.

Following its brilliant, silver straw-yellow hue, this Chardonnay has intense primary aromas of apple blossom, ripe pear and sweet lemon drop, complemented by toasty oak, spice and cream. The wine’s silky smooth texture is overlaid with bright juicy flavors of rich, ripe apple and pear, lingering into a fresh, satisfying finish. This rich, silky Chardonnay is ideal with lobster and other shellfish, especially if served in a butter or cream sauce, roasted poultry or other white meats, creamy pasta dishes, a buttery mushroom omelet or any meal tinged with sweet spices, like cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger.

The 2010 Chardonnay Sonoma County is a deep, expressive wine laced with apricot, pears, flowers and spices. The Chardonnay is fermented in barrels (36% new), yet the wine shows considerable freshness, vivacity and energy. Clean, saline notes round out the mineral-drenched finish. This is a fabulous effort for a wine with a production of 5,400 cases. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. I was very impressed with the wines I tasted from Matanzas Creek and winemaker Marcia Monahan. This is a particularly mature nonvintage, with toast and secondary flavors of almonds and yeast. The acidity is there, but it is mature and ripe, leaving a wine that lingers softly, beautifully integrated. —Roger Voss,

Barrel fermentation in new and seasoned French oak added toasty vanilla and spice complexities, and during 9 months of barrel ageing, we regularly stirred the "lees" in barrel, which adds a creamy texture and increases richness on the palate. Encouraging secondary fermentation adds additional complexity, and in the glass the wine is both creamy and crisp, with ripe apple, Meyer lemon, wet stone, and spiced vanilla flavors. Enjoy over the next 1-3 years.

We barrel fermented 60% of this wine, and aged that portion in barrel for eight months, offering the wine a touch of brown spice and vanilla, while cold fermenting the remainder to maximize a fresh fruit-forward character. Bright lemon and apple aromas mingle with hints of toasty barrel complexity, and on the palate, pear and pineapple with spice and refreshing acidity will have you coming back for another glass. Enjoy this lively chardonnay now and over the next couple of years.

Discovered for us by veteran CW wine consultant Pepi Almodovar, the only problem we've ever had with S.P. Drummer's Rumpus Red over the years has been keeping it in stock. It seems as though everyone who buys one bottle comes back for a case, and everybody who buys a case comes back for two more. The reason? This innovative blend of Syrah (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%) is sheer, unadulterated fun and we don't mean that in the cheap & cheerful, cute critter on the label sense of the term "fun wine." Rather, this is a seriously sophisticated wine that just happens to be an absolute delight to drink. The exuberance comes from the direct to the palate, vivid expression of spicy Syrah fruit, which is lush, mouthfilling, and full-bodied, yet at the same time complex, well-defined and harmoniously well-structured. Winemaker and native-Virginian Scott Peterson, a disciple of the legendary Andr? Tchelistcheff, and later the successor to Paul Hobbs as consulting winemaker at Argentina's flagship producer Catena Zapata, is a totally hands-on winemaker. His philosophy is that only extreme attention to detail in the vineyard, coupled with timely, but minimal intervention in the cellar, can create wines that are truly special. Rumpus Red is very much Scott's personal project, produced from select Sonoma County vineyards of Scott's own choosing. As good as previous vintages have been, the 2009 is without doubt the finest and most delectable yet!

Brilliant clear straw in color, this glimmering Chardonnay displays tropical aromas of guava, pineapple, bright nectarine, peach, green apple, and citrus delicately spiced with toasty oak. Supremely balanced and well-defined, this refreshing wine’s nectarine, peach, and lemon flavors are lifted by notes of orange blossoms and a hint of smoke—adding a toasted warm oak character that reveals itself as sweet vanilla, hazelnut, nutmeg, and smoky bacon—before transcending to a delicate, zesty tangerine finish.
