 | Bodegas Muga is a 200-year old facility located in the historical Barrio de La Estación (railway station district) in the town and municipality of Haro in the La Rioja Province in northern Spain. The 2009 Muga Rosé is a mix of red (60% Garnacha and 10% Tempranillo) and white grapes (30% Viura - aka Macabeo) that spend 12 hours macerating on the skins followed by a slow fermentation in wooden vats over 25 days, then racked and aged in American oak vats for 2 months before bottling.
At first glance it has a strong salmon-pink hue and its aroma is marked by a reminder of fresh apples and ripe red currants coupled with strawberry and rhubarb. Even with the first sip there is clear evidence of the garnacha grape which is well balanced by the viura and tempranilla grapes creating a beautiful mosaic of fruit flavors. It is a very serious wine, a rosé wine with a bit of punch.
Dry, crisp, and tasty in a slightly vibrant style this is a delicious thirst-quenching rosado with deeply satisfying depth and complexity. Fantastic as a "patio wine": pure refreshment in a bottle on a hot afternoon, or as the perfect compliment to most grilled items including veggies, poulty or shrimp, and we can't think of a better wine for the beach. Drink it over the next 12-18 months. |
