2004 Albino Rocca - Barbaresco Vigneto Brich Ronchi
Varietal: Nebbiolo | Country: Italy | Region: Piedmont | Size: 750ml
WS 94
Has very focused, intense aromas of crushed blackberry, with freshly sliced mushroom. A full-bodied, massive wine, with supersilky tannins and a finish that lasts for minutes. Yet this is balanced and classy. Very impressive. Maybe another 2000. Best after 2012. 1,260 cases made.

This full, thick Amarone offers masses of ripe fruit and fresh herbs, with velvety tannins. Turns to black pepper and fruit on the finish. Should age beautifully, but why wait? Drink now.  –JS

2008 Allegrini - Valpolicella Classico
Varietal: Red Blend | Country: Italy | Region: Veneto | Size: 750ml

Don't think of this as just any Valpolicella. As the baby brother to Allegrini's legendary Amarone Della Valpolicella, this robust blend of 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and 5% Molinara surges from the glass with highly quaffable raspberry and dark cherry fruit, highlighted by notes of kirsch, allspice and herbs. The firm, yet fruity finish makes it a perfect match with charcoal grilled steaks and poultry.

The Allegrini winery has long been a reference-point producer for Amarone Della Valpolicella, which some consider to be Italy's greatest red wine. All of Allegrini's wines are produced from estate grown fruit sourced from its 70 hectares of vineyards, all of which are within the Valpolicella Classico DOC. Located in Fumane di Valpolicella, the Allegrini estate has roots in Verona dating back to the 16th century, if not earlier. The property’s modern reputation was established in the mid-20th century by Giovanni Allegrini, who purchased top vineyards, and who introduced many of the estate’s innovative wines. The winery is run today by his children Franco and Marilisa.

2006 Allegrini - Veronese Palazzo della Torre
Varietal: Red Blend | Country: Italy | Region: Veneto | Size: 750ml
WA 90
The 2006 Palazzo della Torre comes across as somewhat restrained for this wine. This is a very polished, elegant Palazzo della Torre with pretty layers of mocha, spices and new leather that add complexity to the fresh, vibrant fruit. Palazzo della Torre is 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese. The addition of 30% dried fruit (Amarone style) adds an extra dimension of complexity. The retro 1970's label is also quite attractive. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016.

This is a terrific set of new wines from Allegrini, one of the benchmark producers in Veneto. -- Antonio Galloni
