Although there are subtle differences between the terroir of Menetou-Salon, an up-and-coming region in central Loire, and that of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé to its east, all three regions offer a unique and distinctive take on the expressive Sauvignon Blanc grape variety. In this classic, cool season Loire year, this well-made Assadet Menetou-Salon rings with the freshness and vibrant acidity of the vintage.
What grabbed me was this white wine's luxuriant richness, reminiscent of an Hermitage Blanc, yet still fresh, and totally unoaked. I thought I needed a Chardonnay to make my 12 bottle case, but with this wine, I can get the best of a northern Rhône style, and the voluptuousness of a California Chardonnay, in one neat package.
Straw yellow in color, the wine offers intense fruity and floral aromas of green apple, pear, and white flowers. The palate is balanced, soft and fresh in the flavor with a long fruit-driven finish.
Apothic White is an approachable blend that combines Chardonnay, Riesling and Moscato to create a luscious, vibrant wine in the bold style of Apothic. Intense flavors of peach, pineapple, honey and vanilla spice make this smooth white blend unforgettable.
Intense floral aromas are followed by notes of fresh peach, pear and citrus with hints of toasty vanilla oak. Soft in texture, this well-balanced wine is crisp and refreshing on the finish.
Soft, round fruit fills the mouth with ripe, juicy flavors. A long finish glides into flavors of ripe apples and lychee. A wine to be enjoyed alone, as an aperitif, or with shellfish, fowl, and light meals that include vegetarian dishes. The number of sunny days, combined with wide daily temperature variations and daily breezes blowing in opposite directions at sunrise and sunset-plus wonderful, sunny exposure of the hillside vineyards-result in Pinot Grigio grapes that have a unique balance of bouquet, flavors, crispness, sugars and acids.
Beringer's 2011 Chardonnay impresses for its balance and harmony. Another wine that punches above its weight, the Chardonnay is laced with bright citrus and floral notes, all in a focused, vibrant style that is incredibly appealing. The partial malo style gives the wine plenty of depth, while not overwhelming the sheer vibrancy of the aromas and flavors. This is another terrific value. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014.
