2009 Bodegas Bleda - Castillo de Jumilla Rosado Jumilla
Varietal: Red Blend | Country: Spain | Region: Murcia | Size: 750ml

Made from 100% Monastrell (Mourvèdre), this has a fresh bouquet of cut strawberries, garden herbs, and a hint of citrus. Flavors of ripe berry and cherry sail over the palate with a subtle undercurrent of light mineral and earth notes, before coming to a crisp and commendably dry finish. Because Monastrell has excellent varietal character, this rosado packs a lot of flavor.

2009 Bodegas Muga - Rioja Rosado
Varietal: Proprietary Blend | Country: Spain | Region: La Rioja | Size: 750ml

Bodegas Muga is a 200-year old facility located in the historical Barrio de La Estación (railway station district) in the town and municipality of Haro in the La Rioja Province in northern Spain. The 2009 Muga Rosé is a mix of red (60% Garnacha and 10% Tempranillo) and white grapes (30% Viura - aka Macabeo) that spend 12 hours macerating on the skins followed by a slow fermentation in wooden vats over 25 days, then racked and aged in American oak vats for 2 months before bottling.

At first glance it has a strong salmon-pink hue and its aroma is marked by a reminder of fresh apples and ripe red currants coupled with strawberry and rhubarb. Even with the first sip there is clear evidence of the garnacha grape which is well balanced by the viura and tempranilla grapes creating a beautiful mosaic of fruit flavors. It is a very serious wine, a rosé wine with a bit of punch.

Dry, crisp, and tasty in a slightly vibrant style this is a delicious thirst-quenching rosado with deeply satisfying depth and complexity. Fantastic as a "patio wine": pure refreshment in a bottle on a hot afternoon, or as the perfect compliment to most grilled items including veggies, poulty or shrimp, and we can't think of a better wine for the beach. Drink it over the next 12-18 months.

2009 Chateau D'Esclans - Rosé Cotes de Provence Whispering Angel
Varietal: Rhone Blend | Country: France | Region: Provence | Size: 750ml

Made from 80-year old Grenache vines, with small amounts of Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre and Rolle blended in, this opens with a lifted bouquet of dried cherry and Provençal herbs, followed on the palate by dried cherry and wild berry flavors, with subtle minerally notes on the crisp, dry finish. It has a striking depth of flavor and length on the palate, quite remarkable for any wine, no less for a Rosé.

2009 Chateau de Segries - Tavel Rosé
Varietal: Rhone Blend | Country: France | Region: Rhone Valley | Size: 750ml

If this wine is any indication, (rosé is often seen as the harbinger of the vintage) 2009 will continue the incredible run the Rhone Valley and Chateau de Segries has seen over the past five years. The wine is a deep, rich rose color and has aromas reminiscent of strawberries and cassis. On the palate, the wine is lively and refreshing with a subtle spiciness that would make it a wonderful match for dishes like oven roasted chicken or whole roasted fish. One of my favorite qualities unique to rosé is that they pair brilliantly with everyday foods.
