Welcome to our 2010 Sauternes Futures Offering!
The 2010 en primeur campaign is now over. Most red Bordeaux came out at prices that were anywhere from slightly higher to way higher than last year. Not in Sauternes. Most reduced their opening price by a decent amount or, at worst, kept their price flat. 2010 is another fantastic vintage for these delectable sweet wines and the prices will never be as low as they are today!
During our ten day trip to Bordeaux in April we spent a full day in Sauternes where, arguably, you'll find the greatest sweet wines in the world. 2010 is another in a long line of excellent vintages for the wines of this beautiful region. They're a little different in style than some of the recent great vintages like 2007 and 2009. The 2010s have more bright fruit and acidity, with good sweetness and concentration, but they're not quite as lush as in years past. They're very fresh, clean, and well-balanced. Even better is the fact that many of the chateaux have released their prices lower than their 2009!
Our day in Sauternes was spent with none other than Bill Blatch, a Bordeaux negociant with a real passion for Sauternes. We had a gorgeous day in Sauternes and we thank Bill (pictured far right) for taking us. We got to visit Chateau Guiraud, Chateau Coutet and Chateau Nairac, and we tasted about 15 other wonderful Sauternes/Barsac barrel samples from the 2010 vintage.

"'Sometimes, we forget how lucky we are,' ruminated Denis Dubourdieu, referring to the remarkable run of Sauternes vintages since 2000, a run that continues with the excellent 2010s...How long will this run of successful Sauternes vintages continue? How long can they keep throwing the dice and turning up a six? Denis Dubourdieu's father reminded his son of the woeful 1960s and 1970s when, in many seasons, nothing could be produced. You never know when such a cycle could return, but they will keep throwing that dice. I recommend stocking up the 2010s and relishing these exceptional Sauternes." -- Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate (May 2011) |

| For those of you unfamiliar with Bordeaux (or Sauternes) Futures, or for those who just need a little refresher course, here it is...
Bordeaux is unique in the way it offers its wines. Each year, as winter turns to spring, the wine world turns its focus to Bordeaux when the most recent vintage is ready to taste out of barrel. After the first organized tastings are completed, usually in early April, we wait until each chateau releases their price to the Bordeaux negociants (wine brokers) throughout April, May and June. Negociants in turn distribute the wine to the entire world. Luckily for us, and for you!, we're able to import these wines directly, thus providing you with excellent prices and world-class selection. All the while, the wines are still maturing in barrel. After about 18-24 months each chateau bottles their wine and the wines we've bought are shipped to our warehouse. Voila.
Why buy these wines in advance? There's really only two reasons to buy Bordeaux (or Sauternes) Futures, price and availability. The prices of these wines will never be as low as they are today. In most vintages, and especially in great vintages, the prices can rise dramatically in the roughly two years it takes for us to receive the wines. Availabilty for some Sauternes, in great vintages like 2010, can be scarce at best. Buying them during the Futures campaign is often the only way to ensure you ever get any. The Futures campaign might also be the only opportunity you have to get the wines bottled in the size format you desire.
Why buy Futures from Calvert Woodley? We've been buying and selling Bordeaux Futures since the 1966 vintage and we know what we're doing. From the first wine we purchase during the campaign till the last bottle is resting comfortably in your possession, we make sure that every step of the process is handled properly and professionally. We have long established relationships with negociants and chateau owners through repeated trips to Bordeaux. CW co-owner Ed Sands established these relationships some 45 years ago and introduced son Michael to everyone he knows. Ed is still actively involved in the business, especially the Bordeaux portion. Despite the fact we're buying and selling wine 18-24 months before it's bottled, we never offer you wine on speculation. We purchase the wine first, through our most trusted sources, and offer it to you only after we've received confirmation.
A few key points about CW's Sauternes Futures Offering: 1 - All orders are subject to written confirmation 2 - Prices are subject to change 3 - Payment due at the time the order is confirmed. DC sales tax will be collected at time of pickup, at the tax rate at time of pickup. There is no sales tax on shipped orders. 4 - Approximate delivery is Fall 2012-Spring 2013 5 - Large sizes (magnums, double mags, etc) may be available, depending on the chateau, for a nominal upcharge. Please inquire if interested. All requests for odd sizes must be received by Aug. 31, 2011.

| 2010 Château Coutet - Barsac (Pre-arrival) (375ml) |
 | We really enjoyed this wine during our group tasting with Bill Blatch, even before he took us to Chateau Coutet later that day! Our meeting with Aline Baly, niece of owner Philippe Baly, only reconfirmed our wonderful feelings for this wine. Rich and lush with tropical fruit flavors galore, this is fantastic stuff!
-- CW Wine Staff (April 2011)
"The 2010 Chateau Coutet has 154-gms/litre residual sugar, one of the highest in Sauternes/Barsac. It is endowed with a delightful bouquet of freshly sliced mango, Tropicana and a touch of honey, with good definition and minerality. The palate is medium-bodied with very impressive balance and poise, and is slightly viscous in the mouth, with almond, lemon curd and a touch of orange peel. The finish is composed and long. The 2010 Coutet is very impressive for the vintage, although I suggest not quite reaching the stellar heights of the magnificent 2009."
93-95 points -- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Really ripe and fleshy, offering delicious glazed peach, apricot and honey notes, with lots of orange blossom and fig and a very rich finish. Starting to take shape now too. Impressive."

| 2010 Château Doisy-Daëne - Barsac (Pre-arrival) (375ml) |
 | "Denis Dubourdieu's Barsac cru has an attractive bouquet with subtle notes of cooking apple, pear and lime-flower, all with very fine delineation. The palate displays good weight and a fine thread of acidity, lending tension and poise that leads to a taut finish, showing good botrytis levels for the vintage. With its trademark minerality in place, this Doisy-Daene comes highly recommended."
92-94 points -- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"This has power in reserve, but relies more on its acidity, with juicy tangerine, clementine, pear and mango notes laced with a hint of green almond. The finish is long, pure and fresh."

| 2010 Château Doisy-Daëne - L'Extravagant Sauternes (Pre-arrival) (375ml) |
 | Wow! We've been carrying this super cuvee from Denis Dubourdieu's Doisy Daene property for many years and this is definitely one of the best. Denis actually told us at our tasting that he feels it is indeed his best ever. Super sweet and rich, but with enough acidity to offer balance and freshness. Lots of candied tropical fruit flavors. An amazing effort that seems to linger in your mouth for minutes.
-- CW Wine Staff (April 2011)
"With 12.2% alcohol and 212 gms residual sugar, the L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daene consists of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillion. It has a very taut, controlled bouquet that (pardon the expression) is less extravagant than recent vintages, but is beautifully defined with touches of kiwi fruit, green apple and limestone. The palate is mellifluous on the entry, struck through with brilliant acidity, lending it such tension and freshness that is in tune with the vintage. Denis hopes to have nine barrels of this fabulous Barsac."
95-97 points -- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Offers lots of sweet botrytis character, with graham, heather honey, fig and glazed pear notes, followed by an unctuous finish. Mouthfilling, with some serious power in reserve. The most backward 2010 Sauternes I've tasted so far."

| 2010 Château Doisy-Védrines - Barsac (Pre-arrival) (375ml) |
 | A rich, sweet Sauternes with great concentration of fruit. Doesn't come across as cloying because of the nice balance. Long finish, very nice.
-- CW Wine Staff (April 2011)
"The Doisy-Vedrines has a refined bouquet of lemon curd, dried honey and just a touch of quince, perhaps not quite as rich as recent vintages, but very well-defined. The palate is well-balanced, with a touch of lime cordial and passion fruit on the entry, and zesty acidity and impressive precision towards the taut, slightly spicy rich finish. Returning after an hour, this sample has enhanced clarity and volume, and subsequent encounters confirm a very promising Doisy-Vedrines."
91-93 points -- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Thick and spicy, with unctuous, still slightly raw-seeming layers of apricot, peach and fig. Ginger cream and green tea check in on the finish. Rather backward still, but there's lots balled up."

| 2010 Château du Cros - Loupiac (Pre-arrival) (375ml) |
 | This sweet wine from the lovely region of Loupiac (just across the river from Barsac and Sauternes) is owned and made by our friend Catherine d'Allhuin and her husband Thibault. They pour their heart and soul into their wines, and nicer people you will not meet.
Their 2010 has beautiful balance and lovely notes of citrus and orange peel. A very versatile sweet wine that will work as an aperitif, or pair well with cheeses, fish and of course, dessert. Given the quality in the bottle, this is a drop dead bargain!

| 2010 Château du Cros - Tradition Loupiac (Pre-arrival) |
 | This is the top bottling of Chateau du Cros, a 200 case cuvee from a special one hectare (2.5 acre) plot in their vineyards dating back to 1907! Comes from the lovely region of Loupiac, just across the river from Barsac and Sauternes. The gnarly old vines in this vineyard sit high atop a hill next to the original chateau - which dates back to the 14th century - with a breathtaking view of the region.
The 2010 Tradition is a special nectar with great richness and complexity that would definitely hold its own in a blind tasting of its peers. Another fantastic effort, and fantastic value, from our friends Catherine and Thibault d'Allhuin.

| 2010 Château Guiraud - Sauternes (Pre-arrival) (375ml) |
 | This "First Growth" Sauternes is owned by our friend Xavier Planty who has been at Guiraud nearly 30 years and just recently became owner after being winemaker and Director. This 2010 is another great Guiraud, fat and rich and quite sweet. Has the classic spiciness of Guiraud. Despite the high level of sweetness, it's fairly light on its feet.
-- CW Wine Staff (April 2011)
"The 2010 Chateau Guiraud has fine purity and minerality on the nose, with touches of passion fruit and dried apricot, later quince joining the fray. The palate is very well-balanced with a lively entry of apricot, quince and a touch of hazelnut. The middle and finish demonstrate fine tension and a lot of freshness. Individual lots seemed to have more race than the final sample, and I suspect it will warrant a higher score once the final blend is in bottle."
91-93 points -- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"This is developing some real power, with glazed peach and pear fruit pushed by graham and honey notes. There's lots of viscosity on the finish, but with good underlying acidity."

 | Rich, dense, creamy, yet fresh and elegant. Beautiful tropical fruit with a long finish.
-- CW Wine Staff (April 2011)
"The Chateau La Tour Blanche has a complex bouquet with scents of grapefruit, honey, apricot and white flowers. The palate is very well-balanced, with a great sense of tension and poise, and notes of citrus lemon, lime, dried honey and a touch of marmalade that lead to a tightly wound, focused, almost Germanic finish. This is intriguing Sauternes that should repay considerable cellaring."

 | Suduiraut has been on a major roll as of late and this is another fantastic effort. Very rich and sweet, but extremely elegant and fresh. Notes of candied passion fruit flow through to a super long finish.
-- CW Wine Staff (April 2011)
"The Chateau Suduiraut has a comparatively rich, botrytized bouquet with dried honey, pineapple and a touch of Seville orange marmalade, with exquisite definition and focus. The palate is well-balanced, with a viscous texture and a good level of botrytis, demonstrating fine minerality and tautness. Dried mango, quince and spice all interlace the focused finish, which is long in the mouth. Tasted against its peers, this has a higher level of intensity and focus. A superb follow-up to the sensational 2009."
94-96 points -- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

| 2010 Domaine de l'Alliance - Sauternes (Pre-arrival) (500ml) |
 | Bill Blatch introduced us to this property last year and it was one of our most popular 2009 Sauternes. The 2010 is a worthy successor. There's a good amount of sweetness but it's not at all heavy. Very fresh, very well-balanced, very nice!
-- CW Wine Staff (April 2011)
"Look out for this tiny producer. Daniel Alibrand has fashioned a light, but attractive bouquet demonstrating good minerality and precision with hints of fresh grapefruit and lime. The palate is fresh and pure on the entry, with light honey, quince and crushed stone, leading to a precise and focused finish that compensates for its lack of botrytis with its precision. Watch this blossom with age."
