"I hope readers will take a serious look at many of the less prestigious appellations and wines from those areas as they will no doubt represent fabulous bargains in 2009. Given the overall style of the 2009s, which combine creamy, voluptuous textures and sensational fruit-driven opulence with remarkable finesse, precision, purity, and vibrancy, the best of the 'little' wines will be delicious young, as will many of the classified-growths. This is a magical vintage!"
-- Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate (April 2010)

After spending seven full days touring Bordeaux and tasting nearly 400 wines from the excellent 2009 vintage (many of them two or three times), we
feel we have a good handle on what promises to be a memorable vintage.

2009 Château Beaulieu - Comtes de Tastes Bordeaux Supérieur
We've carried this wine for years and it always delivers bang for the buck. This vintage it's an especially big wine for a Bordeaux Superieur. We found it to be sturdy with a good structure with dark, rich fruit, espresso, cocoa powder and sweet oak in the nose. The balance here is very good.
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

"A minerally and fruity wine, but subdued and balanced. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a long finish."

2009 Château Caronne-Ste.-Gemme - Haut-Médoc
This property is a real hidden "gem", just a stone's throw away from the St. Julien appellation and stars such as Lagrange and Gruaud Larose. We're happy to keep the secret because it means more wine for us!

Owner Francois Nony, whom we got to visit with during our recent trip to Bordeaux, delivers a great 2009. A blackcurrant and cassis-like nose leads to a classic Medoc earthy finish. This wine
is well-balanced with a freshness of fruit that is a hallmark of this
vintage. It should age well for 5-10 more years. A real bargain!
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

"Crushed blackberry and blueberry on the nose, with hints of sweet
tobacco. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a pretty texture. Slightly hollow center palate, but attractive."

2009 Château Certan de May - Pomerol
"The most powerful, finest overall wine made at this estate since their 1982, the muscular 2009 reveals a dense ruby/purple color in addition to meaty, smoky notes of black cherries, iron, truffles, loamy soil, and spice. Dense, full-bodied, and virile with a boatload of tannin, patience will be a virtue as this wine needs
5-6 years of cellaring. It should last for three decades or more.
(Tasted three times.)"
93-95 points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"I love the dark fruit and underlying aromas of fresh herbs and dried flowers. Full-bodied, with a lovely silky texture and a clean, fresh, fruity and delicate finish."

2009 Château Clarke - Listrac
We've been carrying Chateau Clarke for years now but it wasn't until a few weeks ago that we finally got to visit. Wow, what a beautiful property! This Listrac chateau makes their wine like the top classified growths of Bordeaux and their hard work has paid off. The oak is apparent but well-integrated into this dark-purple, powerful wine. It's a well-balanced wine with bright fruit, great concentration and structure.
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

2009 Chateau d'Aurilhac - Haut-Médoc (Pre-arrival)
We started with this chateau during the 2000 vintage and we were blown away by its color and concentration back then. This 2009 is dark and concentrated as well, with flavors of dark fruit, but more balanced and fresh with an impressively long finish for a wine of this caliber. Tasted multiple times during our trip.
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

"Long-time readers know d’Aurilhac is one of my favorite under-the-radar Bordeaux in top vintages. This impressively made Medoc offers a lot of quality for its price. The 2009 reveals copious black cherry, black currant, earth, and spice notes intertwined with a hint of background oak. A luscious texture, a succulent style, and a juicy, long finish suggest it will drink well for 5-7 years. (Tasted once.)"

2009 Château de la Rivière - Fronsac
We tried this wine when we visited Bill Blatch at Vintex, the negociant firm owned by the people who own Chateau de la Riviere. We were thrilled with the wine. It has a nice earthy style with bright red fruit flavors, some spice and coffee-like aromas, and firm structure with a long fruity finish.
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

"This richly fruity Fronsac lacks the extra dimension and depth to be considered one of the top wines of the region, but it is a solidly made effort displaying a dark ruby/purple color as well as subtle minerality, and attractive blueberry and cherry fruit. It should drink well for a decade. (Tasted two times.)"

2009 Château Dutruch Grand Poujeaux - Moulis-en-Médoc
Another hidden gem, we started with this property about 5 years ago and look forward to receiving this graceful and elegant 2009. It's supple and round but with good structure. Sweet, soft blackberry fruit in the mouth leads to silky tannins on the finish. It will be an attractive drink within four to six years.

"Another sleeper of the vintage, the opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2009 l’Estang exhibits lots of sweet black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with a hint of vanillin. Medium to full-bodied, with surprisingly pure, concentrated, lengthy flavors, it should drink well for 5-6 years. (Tasted once.)"

2009 Château La Mission-Haut-Brion - La Chapelle de La Mission-Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan (Pre-arrival)
"There are approximately 2,000 cases of the 2009 La Chapelle de La Mission, the best one I have ever tasted. A blend of nearly equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% Cabernet Franc added in, it achieved 14.2% natural alcohol. The wine is a remarkable effort, with amazing density, extraordinary fruit quality, dense purple color with meaty notes alongside subtle barbecue smoke, camphor, black currant, sweet cherry, and blackberry. It has a lush, opulent texture, loads of glycerin, and admirable purity and length. I could have drunk a bottle or two just tasting it from the barrel! It should evolve for 10-15 or more years. (Tasted two times.)"
91-94* points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"A structured young red with blueberry, toasted oak and coffee aromas and flavors. Full and silky, with ripe tannins and beautiful fruit. Long and flavorful. Second wine of La Mission."

2009 Château Langoa Barton - St.-Julien
When we tasted the 2009 Langoa Barton with Lilian Barton at her office in St. Julien, we were expecting a well-made, delicious wine, but we couldn't have been more impressed! A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, it was deep purple in the glass with aromas of blueberries, blackberries and a hint of vanilla and pepper. Although it had one of the highest tannin levels in the history of the estate, they were smooth and well-integrated already. It is one of the best Langoa's we've ever tasted from barrel.
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

"I found the 2009 Langoa Barton to be so painfully extracted, excruciatingly tannic, powerful, and backward that I wrote it “should be forgotten for 15 years, and may have some charm in 30-40.” There is no doubting its level of concentration and massiveness, but, wow, proprietor Anthony Barton has sure pushed the extraction, producing a wine for our children’s children. (Tasted once.)"
90-92+ points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Opulent blackberry aromas. Lovely jam, but fresh. Full-bodied and rich. This wine sneaks up on you and follows on the end with lots of chewy tannins. Balanced and round."

2009 Château Le Doyenné - Premières Côtes de Bordeaux
"Made from tiny yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare, this blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc (13.5% alcohol) offers scents of berry fruit, dusty, loamy soil, cedar, and spice box along with a tannic structure. The wine builds incrementally on the palate, and comes close to being outstanding with its purity and balanced, but intense, fruit. Enjoy it over the next 5-6 years. (Tasted two times.)"

2009 Château Léoville Barton - St.-Julien
"This behemoth possesses massive extraction, an opaque purple color, huge density, extreme tannins, and a nearly endless finish. Everything is there, but the highly extracted style and off the chart tannins ensures that no one over the age of forty will ever see this wine hit full maturity. Nevertheless, there is a lot to admire, and it's good to taste a wine that will not be ready to drink for 30+ years. No compromise! (Tasted two times.)"
93-95+ points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Licorice, berry, grape and currant on the nose turns to crushed fruit. Full-bodied, with very fine tannins, pretty fruit, currant and mineral. A balanced and pretty wine. Not quite the intensity and blockbuster style of the 2005, but excellent."

2009 Château Puy-Blanquet - St.-Emilion
"Tasted at JP Moueix. This has a soft plum and boysenberry scented bouquet with sweet red cherries developing with aeration. Moderate definition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite supple tannins on the entry, just a touch of pepper on the entry, good backbone towards the finish that has a slight tinny edge from the Merlot. Fine. Tasted March 2010."

2009 Château Puygueraud - Côtes de Francs (Pre-arrival)
This is a wine we've carried for years. We tasted it pretty much everywhere we went with consistent notes. It has a complex and highly perfumed nose, good extraction and nice ripeness. Has a long finish. Will age nicely.
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

"A solidly made wine from the well-known, highly renowned team of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt, this blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec is soft, round, and easy to drink. It reveals plenty of dark fruits intermixed with notions of earth and spice. Consume it over the next 7-8 years. (Tasted three times.)"
87-88 points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2009 Château Thieuley - Bordeaux Rouge
"Two well-made generic Bordeaux are consistently fashioned by Thieuley. Readers who do not want any wood should buy the regular cuvee, but if you like a little oak, the Francis Courselle should be your choice. Both wines possess generous fruit, and lots of black cherry and black currant notes intermixed with herbs and spice. The Francis Courselle cuts a slightly bigger, oakier, more modern image on the palate, but both wines are well-made and reasonably priced. (Tasted once.)"

2009 Château Tour St. Bonnet - Médoc
We've been carrying this wine for a number of years and it's one of our most popular petit chateaux. This 2009 has enticing aromas of cassis and red berries with good length and balance in the mouth. There are lush, sweet tannins on the finish. A nice, earthy Medoc style that reminds us of the 2005. Tasted multiple times during our trip.
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

"This has been one of the most reliable wines in Bordeaux over the last 30+ years, and I have enjoyed many vintages of it. It sells for a song, and the 2009 may turn out to be the best they have ever made. This inky purple-colored wine offers up notes of creme de cassis, spring flowers, and forest floor that seem to have more in common with a classified growth than a petite chateau. Medium-bodied, luscious, and rich, this is a beauty to drink over the next 10 years. (Tasted two times.)"

2009 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel - Médoc (Pre-arrival)
Made by the Cos d'Estournel team, Goulee is a wonderful example of great Bordeaux at a modest price. We tasted this during our visit with our friend Jean-Guillaume Prats at Chateau Cos d'Estournel and we were duly impressed. The wine was dark -- almost imperceptibly black -- with flavors of black and blue berries as well as notes of fresh pepper. It's intensely concentrated and powerful, yet it has wonderful balance and freshness.
--CW Wine Staff (April 2010)

"Made by Cos d’Estournel’s Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier, Goulee is meant to offer an introduction to a top-flight Bordeaux. Composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, it exhibits a sexy, upfront nose of sweet black currant fruit, cassis, blackberries, forest floor, and underbrush. Dense purple-colored and fleshy with abundant glycerin, this pure, deep, chewy wine will be delicious young and age nicely for 7-8 years. (Tasted once.)"
89-91 points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Delicious red fruits and spices on the nose and palate. Full- to medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long finish. Layered. Subtle. Very pretty wine. Perhaps the best I have had from here."
