"So my advice to those who have just completed their 2009 shopping list: just add a case of Sauternes, especially if you have never done so before. Never has there been such a consistent vintage and nothing brightens up or completes a cellar like Sauternes.
You will feel good when you order a case and even better when you eventually pop the cork." --Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate (April 2010)

| Those of you who followed our recent trip to Bordeaux know about our day in Sauternes with Bill Blatch. A Bordeaux negociant by trade, who knows a staggering amount about all Bordeaux, Bill has a real passion for the sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac. Aside from knowing more than everyone else about Sauternes, there's not a person alive who is a better promoter and/or spokesperson for the wines of this region. He convinced us a long time ago! And to top it all off, a nicer guy you will not find.
We had a beautiful day in Sauternes and we got to visit several chateaux and taste many great wines. We visited Chateau Guiraud, Chateau Climens, Chateau Doisy Daene and Chateau Clos Haut Peyrauguey.
It's pretty clear that 2009 in Sauternes is an outstanding year.
Bill has been kind enough to allow us to use his tasting notes for our 2009 Sauternes Futures campaign, as you will see below.
As with our Red Bordeaux offering, this list will be updated as chateaux release their prices. Please check back often.

| 2009 Château Climens - Barsac (Pre-arrival) |
 | "This is a tough call to make, as the wine is still in 14 of the original 17 lots and a prototype blend has not yet been attempted. So we just have to taste all the lots and then do the assemblage in our heads.
The main body of the blend will be composed of the highly botrytised pickings of 2nd to 6th October. These lots taste rich yet very fine, almost delicate and extremely florally expressive. They will be blended with the smaller and also finer and lighter first pickings and some but not all of the heavier final ones.
My guess is that this is classic Climens: not over-sweet or overstated in any way, all purity and finesse, albeit on a background of rich intensity, which will be slightly less sweet in appearance than '07."
--Bill Blatch
"Picked in just two tries, 90% picked in one trie, tasting through 13 separate lots, the core components of a great Climens appear to be in place. Paying particular attention to the lots that constitute a large percentage of the blend (usually around 15%) the common themes are ones of great purity, persistency and precision. The aromatics display pure honey, minerals, occasionally a faint scent of spearmint and white peach, most with spellbinding precision. On the palate, Berenice Lurton has some stupendous lots at her disposal, with ample botrytis, ethereal definition, one or two more powerful, quite spicy lots and others that are shorter and will undoubtedly lend the blend an acidic cut. It will be a joy to taste this after bottling."

| 2009 Château Doisy-Védrines - Barsac (375ml) |
 | "The feature of this wine is clearly its menthol-fresh brightness and spring flowers aromas. Probably all this comes, rather like at La Tour Blanche, partly from the particularly fresh nature of the 15% Sauvignon, partly from the soil structure.
At 140 g/l, the wine is certainly very rich and this sweetness almost - but doesn't quite - smother these fine aromas. So the wine is a combination of extreme fragrance with quite extreme concentration: rich yet fresh, strong yet gentle."
--Bill Blatch
"This is comparatively timid on the nose, giving very little away at the moment despite rigorous coaxing. But the palate is very promising, very well balanced, very focused with a fine citrus attack on the entry, fanning out towards an apricot, white peach and lime tinged finish that shows a great deal of unctuous honeyed fruit on the finish. This is an exuberant Doisy-Vedrines that yearns to offer pleasure."
92-94 points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Shows lots of lemon pie and almond spice, with hints of bitter lemon. Full-bodied, with a nutmeg and honey finish. Racy."

| 2009 Château du Cros - Loupiac (Pre-arrival) (375ml) |
 | Our recent trip to Bordeaux included a great visit to Chateau du Cros in Loupiac, just across the river from Sauternes and Barsac. Hiking up to the centuries old, original castle of du Cros, on one of the highest points in the entire region, was quite a thrill. Our friend Catherine d'Halluin is making great wines at du Cros and this sweet wine is an absolute steal at this price!

 | This 600 bottle cuvee -- only 50 cases! -- is made from the oldest vines on the property. Some of these gnarly vines are 100 years old! Each vine produces a tiny amount of this sweet nectar.

| 2009 Château Rieussec - Sauternes (Pre-arrival) (375ml) |
 | "Rieussec flourishes in highly concentrated vintages, and 2009 is no exception. With 150 pickers working two 8-hour shifts, they managed to keep up to date with the year's rapid botrytis, and so maintained a total purity, elegance and complexity of flavour, and at 4,0 g/l, a high tone of acidity. At the same time, at 160 g/l residual, the wine is as usual unashamedly rich.
The result is that honeyed sort of purity in the concentration that we saw something of in the historic '89 and '01, possibly superior to the former and almost up to the latter. The balance seems so natural and gives the impression of being able to age for a century or more."
--Bill Blatch
"The minerality and stoniness really comes through on the nose of this Rieussec, more than the 2007. The palate is very well balanced with superb acidity, real tension, steely with great precision with notes of apricot, white peach and honey on the beautifully defined finish. Probably the best Rieussec since the astounding 2001."
95-97 points--Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Lemon peel and pear tart on the nose. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with good acidity, lemon meringue flavors and a spicy finish."
